CHENNAI: A man from Chattisgarh was travelling with his relatives when he died on a govt bus that was nearing the city. Instead of taking him to the nearest hospital or notifying police, the bus crew decided to abandon the body, along with his relatives, on a desolate highway citing delays and legal trouble. Following this, the driver was dismissed and conductor suspended on Monday night.
Bhima Mandavi, 60, a native of Chhattisgarh, set off on a journey on Sept 6 from Villupuram with his relatives, Ashok Kumar Oyan, 19, and Kajunu, 20, to Chennai. But Mandavi fell critically ill and died on the bus. The driver, Ramkumar, and conductor, Rasool Rahman, dropped the deceased and his young relatives on the roadside.
Fearing legal complications and multiple court visits, the crew left Ashok and Kajunu stranded on a dark stretch of highway in the middle of the night. Neither of them spoke Tamil, and they struggled to find help until some passersby noticed their distress and stepped in. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Villupuram bus driver continued with the journey.
The incident came to light only because of public outrage on social media three days later. Under the TN Registration of Birth and Death Rules, govt employees are required to notify police in such cases. Following a complaint, Ramkumar was dismissed, and conductor Rasool Rahman was suspended.
